A whole new world landed on Broadway in 2014, when the Tony Award-nominated Best Musical “Aladdin” flew into the New Amsterdam Theatre. Based on the 1992 Disney animated film of the same name, the musical follows the titular street urchin as he journeys to the Cave of Wonders, where he discovers a magical lamp that changes his life forever. Unleashing a friendly and funny Genie who will grant him three wishes, Aladdin transforms into royalty to win the heart of Princess Jasmine. The only thing standing in his way is the Sultan’s villainous Grand Vizier, Jafar, who will stop at nothing to steal the lamp and take the throne

Directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw, “Aladdin” brings audiences on an enchanting adventure to the deserts of Agrabah, complete with high-flying carpet rides and a toe-tapping Genie that will have you wishing for more.

ALADDIN recommends that children be at least six years old to attend a performance of ALADDIN.

## What to watch for
The 337 costumes worn in “Aladdin” were all custom made by hand.

In the Genie’s musical number “Friend Like Me,” there are 1,428 Swarovski crystals on a pair of men’s pants.

James Monroe Iglehart, who originated the role of the Genie in the stage production, took home the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

Jonathan Freeman, who voiced the villainous Jafar in the 1992 film, reprised his performance on stage in the original cast of the musical.

Don’t expect Aladdin’s monkey sidekick, Abu, to make an appearance. In the stage adaptation, Aladdin has a trio of friends named Omar, Babkak, and Kassim.

- Born in Morgantown, West Virginia, Trevor Dion Nicholas is perhaps best known in the UK for originating the role of the Genie in [Disney’s *Aladdin*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/1351-aladdin). 

- Graduating from Morgantown High School, he pursued college education in his home state at West Virginia University. His Broadway debut was in *Disney’s Aladdin* as the standby Genie to James Monroe Iglehart, before starring in the musical’s London production at the [Prince Edward Theatre] as the Genie. In a [review for LondonTheatre.co.uk], “Trevor Dion Nicholas's Genie leads the riotous Friend Like Me that virtually stops the show…  He is the comic heart of the show”. He's also played George Washington in the West End production of *Hamilton*.

In the United States, Dion Nicholas has appeared in productions of *Ragtime*, *The Wiz* and *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee*.

The Hudson Theatre first opened on Oct. 19, 1903, with *Cousin Kate* starring Ethel Barrymore. Although the architectural design of the theatre was first drawn up by the firm of J. B. McElfatrick & Son in 1902, the project was taken over and completed by the firm of Israels & Harder. It was built for theatrical producer Henry B. Harris, who managed the theatre until his untimely death as a passenger on the RMS Titanic in 1912. 

During the 1930s and 1940s, the building was also used as for CBS Radio broadcasts, when it wasn't being used for theatrical productions. NBC purchased the property in 1950, converting it into a permanent television studio and it became the home of *The Tonight Show* from 1954 to 1959.

Over the next few decades, under the ownership of developer Abraham Hirschfeld, the theatre was used for a number of different purposes: as a legitimate theatre (1960 to 1968), an adult movie house (from 1974), and as the Savoy rock club (from 1980). The Hudson Theatre was awarded New York landmark status in 1987.

The theatre was purchased by Millennium & Copthorne Hotels in 1995 as a part of the surrounding luxury hotel known as the Millennium Broadway and used as a business conference center and auditorium. During this time, it was additionally used as a stand-up comedy venue for Comedy Central broadcasts.

In 2015, it was announced that the Ambassador Theatre Group would purchase the venue as its second official Broadway venue, following the [Lyric Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lyric-theatre). The Hudson re-opened in 2017 with a revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical *Sunday in the Park with George,* starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

Michael Ball was born in Worcestershire in 1962 and has since established himself as an actor, singer and broadcaster, not only in the West End but also television and radio.

After studying at Guildford School of Acting, he caught his first break starring in *The Pirates of Penzance* at Manchester Opera House. Starring in *The Pirates of Penzance* got him cast in the London production of [*Les Miserables*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/300-les-miserables) at the [Palace Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/palace-theatre) as Marius. Following this, Ball was invited to follow Steve Barton’s original portrayal of Raoul in the second casting of [*The Phantom of the Opera*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/308-the-phantom-of-the-opera) at [Her Majesty’s Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/her-majestys-theatre). Other notable roles include playing Alex in *Aspects of Love* at the [Prince of Wales Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/prince-of-wales-theatre) in 1989, and as Giorgio in Stephen Sondheim’s *Passion*. 

Ball’s one man show *Alone Together*, which was originally performed at the [Donmar Warehouse](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/donmar-warehouse) was later reprised at the [Theatre Royal Haymarket](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/theatre-royal-haymarket) in 2004. 1998 marked a busy year for Ball, performing in *The Fiftieth Birthday Concert of Andrew Lloyd Webber* at the Royal Albert Hall, *Sondheim Tonight* at the Barbican and *Hey, Mr. Producer: The Musical World of Cameron Mackintosh*. He returned to the theatre in 2002 as Caractacus Potts in *Chitty Chitty Bang Bang* at the [London Palladium](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/london-palladium).

In 2004, Ball sang for the Queen and her guests for a one off special concert performance of [*Les Miserables*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/300-les-miserables) at Windsor Castle. The following year, he replaced Michael Crawford as Count Fosco in *The Woman in White*, a role which took him to the West End and Broadway. In 2007, Ball played Edna Turnblad in [*Hairspray*]) at the [Shaftesbury Theatre], winning an Olivier Award.

- Following this, he starred in *Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street* alongside [Imelda Staunton] at the [Adelphi Theatre](). Ball was also part of the cast for the *25th Anniversary Concert of Les Miserables* at The O2 Arena along with [Matt Lucas], Alfie Boe and [Samantha Barks]. The concert was telecast live to cinemas globally and later released on DVD.

Outside the theatre, Ball has released several solo albums from 1992 - 2014. He has also established himself as a presenter for shows such as *This Morning*, *The Michael Ball Show* and *The One Show*. He also appeared as a Judge in the talent television show *Soapstar Superstar* for series two in 2007. 

Recently, Ball has starred in *Chess* at the London Coliseum, and played Javert in [*Les Misérables - The All-Star Staged Concert*](https://lt.qa.ttix.io/show/300-lemizzzz) at the Gielgud Theatre. In 2021, he reprised his performance as Edna Turnblad in [*Hairspray*]() at the London Coliseum.

Ball will return to the West End in 2023 to star in *Aspects of Love* at the Lyric Theatre.

It’s the circle of life, and Simba has been named the heir to the throne of the Pride Lands, much to the chagrin of Scar, King Mufasa’s jealous younger brother.
